I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt
of your letter No. 48 of the 30th. ultimo enclosing copy of a
further memorandum which you have addressed to the Tu Tu on the
subject of the supply of limestone to the Green Island Cement
Company.

On the 17th. instant I addressed a telegram to
His Britannic Lajesty's Minister at Peking on this subject. I
attach a paraphrase of my Lessage and of Sir John Jordon's reply.
I considered that a representation from this Government might
strengthen Sir John Jordan's hands.

There seems to be no doubt that the embargo
upon the supply of limestone for the Company originated in a
suggestion by the Director of the Green Canton Cement Works for
the prohibition of the export of limestone from the Canton Pro-
-vince see enclosures to Lesars. Shewan Tomes and Company's
letter of the 1st. of lay forwarded to you in Mr. Severn's letter

In connection with the petition of the Director; To the Board of Industry I shall be obliged if you will take an
opportunity of informing the Tu Tu that it is not the fact that the
exportation of limestone is prohivited from Indo-China. Lessrs. Shewan Tomes and Company can obtain any quantity they desire of limestone from Haiphong, but the cost of freight from that port renders the import of stone from there «remsemebi unremunerative.
The attitude now taken up by the Canton Authorities seems to be that it is unlawfully quarried limestone
